Everyone has a perception of reality that governs the way they live – a single lens through which they see the world. The way this works in day-to-day life is that information is filtered and processed through this lens, and comes out as human behavior. This lens, or image, is all encompassing – it affects how people see themselves, others, and the wider system of the world. Genuine, inside-out transformation involves changing this image. Essentially, the process of transformation is intentional – people must willingly embrace a singular, internally, aligned, internally coherent image and must willingly use their new image to filter and process information. If an individual does choose to embark on this process – to become aware of what their image currently is, and what it could change into – they become free to live fulfilled and meaningful lives. Change at the higher levels become possible too, as transformed, whole individuals lead to transformed groups (with their own, shared image),  and ultimately transformed organizations and societies. Vanguard was able to illustrate what this kind of total, singular and internally coherent transformation meant for Habitat for Humanity, and how to avoid false ‘transformation’ that changes a part of the external environment only.
